The Western States Motel

Closing my eyes, I would think this is Beck singing with the Shins. But I would be wrong. It’s a L.A. based band called The Western States Motel (Carl Jordan).

I love the sound of this indie band. They actually started off has a recording entity for documentaries and unmade short films. In 2007 they released their own self titled album and more recently an EP, Painted Birds Flying in the Orange Mirror Sun.

When I listen to this smooth, relaxing band I feel like I am listening to a sound track of a Zack Braff film. I totally dig the mellow feeling. I just want o be tanning or laying on my bed staring into space while listening to semi psychedelic band.

But try not to zone out too much, because the lyrics are killer. I think you’ll be pleased with this Carl Jordan. I couldn’t decide on which song to share with you lovely people out there in music land….but I think I’ll go with the song that popped my The Western States Motel cherry….Powerlines.

Atmosphere

Atmosphere is one of the longest running independent hip hop groups. Going hard since 1989, this lyrical genius has numerous meaningful jams. Some are slow and sad, some are fast paced, and some are filled with anger. No matter what emotion is being portrayed, these little ditties are awesome! Sean Daley (Slug) and Anthony Davis make a fantastic duo.

Albums can make you feel like you’re on an emotional roller coaster, and you may feel that after listening, but it’s in a totally good way. You also may think that all the songs are about women, but some of them are actually an allegory for hip hop.  Or in the case of one of my favorites, Fuck You Lucy (found on God Loves Ugly, 2002), Slug has said that Lucy Ford is a play on words for Lucifer. Where Lucy used to represent ex girlfriends or alcohol, he soon realized that Lucky stood for the demonetization of himself.

The lyrics are very clever, and the sound is different. When I hear his music blasting through my speakers, I know right away it’s Atmosphere, and a smile comes to my face. What makes him different from mainstream rappers is the lyrics. He is here to make meaningful music, and to tell a story, and in a way, vent. He wants to his music to be heard because it means something. The music isn’t being made because of money, or so teens and party goers have another face paced dance jam with meaningless lyrics to grind to.

So the song I am going to share is Sunshine, enjoy!

Vampire Weekend

Quirky lyrics + playful beats + four Columbia University grads= Vampire Weekend

The four NYC preps have been jamming together since 2006, their first gigs being the university’s literary societies and parties. The music can pull you out of a bummer mood any day!  Just pop in either their first self titled album Vampire Weekend or their sophomore album  Contra. These little ditties will turn your frown upside down.

While singing along, you may not realize what exactly you’re singing. Like many other songs, we get too carried away dancing, singing at the top of our lungs, and loving life to even notice what we are singing. The hipster band has been praised and scrutinized for their lyrics. To me, they are perfect just the way they are! Good music don’t always have to make sense, it just has to make you feel (and of course make you want to listen to more).

Shout out to Lil Jon in Oxford Comma! “First the window, then it’s to the wall, Lil’ Jon, he always tells the truth”

Both albums are the perfect driving tunes. Imagine summertime, high of 75, windows down, blasting A Punk, singing until your lungs can’t take it anymore while heading to the beach. That to me is perfection. I couldn’t asking for anything more.

Whether or not Lil Jon does indeed tell the truth or not, give these guys a listen, you won’t be disappointed! The videos are pretty rad too!

The video I chose to share to highlight the musical talent of this happy go lucky band is Cousins, of the Contra Album

Youtube Stars

Saying Youtube is a powerhouse for musical talent is an understatement. There are millions of stardom hopefuls singing and dancing their hearts out. There have been many success stories of fame and fortune that came off of youtube.  There is the infamous Justin Bieber who was discovered by Usher after posting videos of himself. The spectrum of 15 minutes of fame to full stardom is endless.  Ellen Degeneres has even tracks these uber talented music makers on her show!

But today, I’m not going to give you an ear full about J.Biebs. Instead, I’m going to tell you about the less famous youtube superstars. These talented songbirds have more musical talent than the usual top 40 singers we hear on the radio 24/7.

The musical genius for today  is Kiersten Holine. I have be a huge fan of hers for well over a year. Her sound? Bon Iver meets Fleet Foxes meets Ray Lamontagne. Her covers are just as good, if not better than the originals and her original songs are beautiful.  Her has a very mellow, soft sound. The uber talented young woman could go very far. Her songs are about love found, love lost, and moving on. You are probably thinking, ok so is like every song I listen to, but Miss Holine has a truth and emotional sound to her. You can feel the real emotion. Even watching her videos, her eyes and body language portray the passion she has for not only her music, but music in general. She feels it and makes it her own. Her is one of my favorite songs of hers, Ignoble

The Dirty Heads

Who doesn’t love sunshine, the beach, and nice chill out music? Well when yo listen to The Dirty Heads that is exactly what you’ll imagine. The Dirty Heads’ have a way to transport you from the bone chilling winter to 75 degrees and sunny on a beach in California. This is the perfect band to help heat the winter blues. They are have a great sound to them. The spectrum goes from rap to mellow chill out melodies.  These five young guys are from Huntington, Ca and have been named one of the best new bands of 2010 by Rolling Stone Magazine.

This band always makes me feel better and the main reason I have been able to survive this long grueling winter.  Some of the messages in their music include, never giving up, love of music, and just have a good time and enjoy life. All of these are things I live by and one of the many reasons I love this band. They also work with Rome from Sublime!

Another great perk about these bros is their pandora radio station; they have by far the best radio station, I find myself hardly skipping any of the songs! Some of their influences are Sublime, 311, and Beastie Boys.

These “dirty” boys are keeping busy on their  U.S. tour and hitting everywhere from California to New York to Vermont.

The song I decided to share is one of my favorites. It’s called Antelope. It’s one of their rap songs that will hopefully leave you in a good chill mood, rock out dudes!

Adele

Adele has become very popular over the last few months here in America. Her haunting voice and honest lyrics are what make her amazing. Her sound is almost effortless and can send chills down your spine. I was very hesitant at first to like Adele because of her first single here in the states, “Chasing Pavements”. Personally I cannot stand that song, so after hearing that I was quick to judge and totally dismissed this talented young woman. After hearing her singles off her new album 21, I was totally blown away and retracted all my negative thoughts and comments. “Someone Like You” is a touch and personal song that truly speaks from the heart. I can totally connect and relate to.

“Rolling In the Deep” is a powerhouse of beats. This song is a good one to run on the treadmill to. This song will get your heart racing and pulse jumping.  The lyrics are emotional in a rock n’ roll beat. I love that it’s about redemption and moving on. The beat goes well with the lyrics and theme of the song. It is a feel good song that many can relate to ( the music video is pretty rad too!).

I would love to hear her live. When youtubing her, I try to look for her live. You almost can’t tell that it is live untell you hear the audience cheering and clapping. I love when artists sound the same, or even better when live.

The video I am posting for this songbird is “Someone Like You” off her new album 21.

Hanson

I know what you’re thinking…”Hanson, really?” But don’t be too quick to judge. I know that they are known for MMbop, in which the only words you could ever really understand was mmbop; but the actually lyrics of that song are really meaningful and aren’t just random words out together. You are probably thinking, “Hanson…they were sisters right?” No, they are not sisters, but brothers, and these brothers are extremely talented.

Their harmonizing is beyond incredible and their lyrics are amazing! I have seen them live and they are one of these bands who sound ever better live ( even though you think that couldn’t be possible). When they play, their music comes to life and  they rock out like there’s no tomorrow. Hanson has given me chills on more than one occasion.

The music id full of truth, emotion, and beautiful harmonies.  Don’t judge them by their first single (and like I said, the actual lyrics are great!). Give these talented and super cute brothers a second chance.

Here is one of my favorite songs from their latest album “I’ve been thinkin’ ’bout something”  It has a 1960’s feel that has been inspired by many of the greats from the rockin’ 60’s. See how many you can know….

Mumford and Sons

So I thought my first band to introduce would be the beyond talented, Mumford and Sons. I have been obsessed with this London based band. These four young men have so much musical talent, I can’t even begin to explain it.

Not only are their lyrics amazing, meaningful, and full of emotion; but the actual music is impeccable.  This band of English gentlemen are the epitome of the ultimate music makers. There are so many examples of lyrics I would love to post, but I think that would be a little too obsessive. So here is ONE of my favorite lyrics. It is from the emotional song Awake My Soul.

“Lend me your eyes I can change what you see. But your soul you must keep, totally free…In these bodies we will live, in these bodies we will die, where you invest your love, you invest your life.”

When Mumford and Sons play music, they play it for their hearts and souls. They do not do it for the fame and fortune, they do it as a way to expression and for the love of music. Their performance at the 2011 Mtv Video Music Awards was breath taking to say the least. I found myself unable to stop smiling. They were shaking the stage they were jamming so hard.

In my eyes, this band deserves all the fame and fortune in the world because their music is incredible to say the least. They know how to word the feelings we all feel. They maybe the perfect band to zone out to in a music comma.

here is one of my personal favorites (although actually picking a favorite is nearly impossible) Winter Winds

Musical Geniuses

Hello World,

Music is a powerful and magnificent thing, hence the reason i started this blog. I have always turned to music. My grandparents and parents have always had the radio blaring even since I could remember. I believe music should be a part of everyones life.

Sometimes people need a break from reality and need to just need to be in solitary confinement with music. For me, the place I love to go to and just zone out with musical perfect is the ocean. I can sit there for hours and just get totally engulfed in music. Being in a “music comma” is good for your health.

In this blog  hope to be insightful and educate others about musical geniuses, and also to learn from others! So if you have artists who don’t get the type of recognition or appreciation they deserve, PLEASE feel free to share here!
